Facelift Surgery in Mumbai

The face is the gateway to your personality. Any change in the body habits, nutrition deficiency, stress, lack of sleep and aging shows early on the face. Many of such changes can be treated by cosmetology procedures which reverse the changes. Face Lift is one such procedure for reversing the age-related changes of the face, i.e., wrinkling, sagging of skin, jowls prominent folds and appearance of new unwanted lines. The surgical Facelift surgery in Mumbai is the only long-lasting procedure to reverse these changes.

It is important to understand that there are other non-surgical procedures of the face which help in facial rejuvenation such as radiofrequency, lasers, thread lifts, HIFU and so on but these procedures act on the very superficial layers of the skin and the results are temporary. The benefits which can be expected from such procedures can be in the tune of 10 to 30 % for the moderately aged skin. These procedures thus have a role in treating early aging. Surgical facelift not only removes the excess lax skin, it also tightens the underlying fascia called SMAS on which the skin slides, thus strengthening the base or plinth of the skin structure complex. It is a very gratifying procedure and the incisions are hidden in the creases around the ear and thus are least visible.

Face Lift and Neck Lift
Types of Facelift:
Face and neck can be divided into upper, mid and lower face and the neck. Accordingly, we have an Upper facelift or Forehead- brow lift, mid facelift, lower facelift and neck lift.

Upper facelift: This involves taking care of the forehead and the eyebrows. With the upper facelift, we correct the wrinkles of the forehead and lift the eyebrows which tend to flatten with age. Depending on the amount of sagging and wrinkling, various methods have been devised including endoscopic methods with very small cuts. The cuts of upper facelifts are hidden in the hair.

Mid Facelift: Midface lift tightens the cheek and the malar area. Of all the types of the facelift, this is the most commonly done. It can be done alone or as a part of a full facelift surgery. Different types of procedures and cuts have been described for mid facelift surgery. Our approach is through the hair in the temporal area which is not seen. We frequently use endoscopes to reach down up to the cheek and pull the descending cheek from a hidden cut in the hairs, thus making the procedure “SCARLESS” Mid facelift can correct the sagging of the lower part of the face also if the sagging is not too much.

Lower Facelift: Lower facelift surgery tightens the skin in the lower part of the face, including the jowls. The cut for this type of facelift surgery is in the ear lobule crease and goes around the ear lobule to the back of the ear.

Neck lift: Through the cut of the lower facelift, the sagging skin of the neck can also be addressed. The neck skin can be redraped and the excess skin trimmed at the back of the ear.

Neck bands Correction: Often there are neck bands which are due to loose neck muscle called as Platysma. These bands are on the sides of the midline and are addressed by a small cut under the chin to tighten the skin. At our centre, we use a different approach which leaves no cuts and tightens those muscles.

Full Facelift: In a full facelift surgery, all the areas of the face are treated including the upper, mid and lower face. Often the facelift surgery in Mumbai is personalized according to the problem each patient has.

Assessment for face lift : A detailed examination of face and neck is undertaken to understand which areas show maximum effects of aging. Accordingly, a plan is made. Very often surgical and non-surgical procedures are both combined to give the best results. At times surgery may be too much and at times the nonsurgical treatments will not give the optimum results. It is very important to decide what the optimum treatment for a particular face is. The pros and cons of all the options need to be evaluated. One must understand that anyone procedure may not be the solution and a combination of treatment may be devised to correct the problem. For example, a facelift procedure can correct the sagging of the skin of the cheek but cannot correct the flatness of the cheek which happens due to the aging. An ancillary procedure may be required alongside for best results.

Assessment of eyes: The most important assessment after the assessment of the face is the assessment of the eyes. Under eye area show the signs of aging alongside that of the face like under eye bags and wrinkling of the skin. These changes cannot be corrected by facelift surgery and will require another type of surgery called blepharoplasty.

Role of the patient during a facelift consultation: All the areas of the face merge into one although it is often described in parts. Any change in one part of the face reflects in the other part and thus a bit of insight is expected from the patient. Also, the eyes, upper and lower eyelids, eyebrows and nose also show some effects of aging and the clinician cannot many times be able to show or emulate all the corrections simultaneously. To show the effect of the facelift, all the fingers of the clinicians are engaged thus the effect of blepharoplasty or correction of under eye wrinkling cannot be shown simultaneously! These are practical difficulties and require the patient to be understanding, patient and imaginative.

Morphing Software: Very often the patients expect the clinician to show the changes on the computer. In the opinion of Dr. Anshuman Manaswi, the changes in the computer are at best only gross and only act as guidelines. Many times such changes, especially in the face is not possible or possible only to a limited extent because the face is three-dimensional structures and DOCTORS ARE NOT SOFTWARE EXPERTS. Even photoshopping the face requires a lot of expertise and the changes on the computer may not be actually possible to be given because of structural limitations of the body. The concept of light reflection which determines the shadowing and the contours are also misappropriated by photoshopping unless done by an expert. In our opinion, what the clinician is able to show you by stretching the skin is the best guide.

The facelift procedure is usually done under general anesthesia although smaller corrections can be done under local anesthesia. Accordingly, the stay can vary from a couple of hours to one or two days. The procedure can take from an hour to around 4 to 5 hours depending on the type of surgery undertaken.

Pressure garments are usually worn for some days for the newly draped skin to settle down and to reduce the swelling. The stitches can either be dissolvable or removable depending on the type of surgery. Other surgeries which can be combined with a facelift procedure are blepharoplasty, some local liposuction or a rhinoplasty. Although one has to bear in mind the pain bearing capacity of the patient and the magnitude of the surgery.

At La Transformatione’, we have great experience in conducting various types of facelifts for various age groups. There is no fixed age after which a facelift can be done. Many patients feel that a facelift surgery can be done only in the late forties or fifties. But it is not so. It can be done early if the skin sags as in cases of weight loss. Conversely, it may not be required in many persons even in later ages.

Our USP at La transfromatione’ is SCARLESS facelift and SCARLESS CORRECTIONS OF FACIAL PLATYSMAL BANDS. These special approaches go a long way to make the patients more comfortable and anxious. Full recovery from facelift takes about 6 weeks, Most of the swelling disappears in about 4 to 5 days. The final result may take a couple of months. It is best to discuss these in details with the Plastic surgeons.

Side effect: As in any surgery, there can be side effects. The side effects may range from minor bruising to blood clotting to infection. Asymmetrical results may happen requiring some minor corrections. Rarely nerve damages can occur. Even in the rare, more than often they are temporary and recover fully.

WORDS OF WISDOM: Facelift surgery in Mumbai is a very rewarding surgery, both for the patient as well as for the doctors. But the surgery requires meticulous techniques and cannot be hurried upon. Accordingly, a meticulous preoperative planning is a must. From the patient’s point of view, it is important to understand and decide the best option for her/ him. Also please discuss the options of Botox, fillers and other nonsurgical techniques before making up your mind for surgery. Most of the changes of a facelift can be mirrored by stretching the facial skin and it is often wise to pull the skin in front of the mirror before the surgery to understand the expected result.
